ABOUTH THE PROJECT
ARETE CATALYST

Teachers in general education schools in all Europe are facing the challenge of „overfull“ school curriculum that is focused on knowledge and skills, and is lacking time for developing transversal competences and virtues - moral education, ethical development, social-emotional learning etc., and lack of time for soft skill development - communicative skills, empathy, cooperation, critical thinking, social responsibility. Therefore six partners from 3 European countries have joined to tackles this challenge and create supporting tools for school teachers in the development of students’ intra-personal competencies and character education at school.
Full title of the project is "Supporting teachers for developing intra-personal competencies and character education at school", while project acronym is ARETE CATALYST. ARETE in Greek means “virtue” or “character excellence”. A CATALYST is an activator or facilitator of changes and transformations.
ARETE CATALYST aims to empower school teachers for enriching the educational culture of their institution with a focus on transversal competence and character education
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Objectives, target group and main activities of the project
The main objective of the project is to support school teachers in the development of students’ intra-personal competencies and character education. The topic, is addressed through an innovative multifaceted perspective such as philosophy for children, education for citizenship, transversal competence development and virtues ethics.
During the implementation of the projec we aim to reach 2 innovative Intellectual outputs :
The preliminary research will be implemented by academic partners in close collaboration with regional authorities. The practical insights of experts practitioners from schools will enhance the quality of the support program itself.
The primary target group of the project are teachers of comprehensive schools willing to develop the educational culture of their school.
The project will involve also:
school administration, headmasters, teachers of the general education schools;
policy makers, chief specialists in the field of education of local governments;
researchers of universities and academic staff who are involved in the creation of new educational programmes and life long-learning of pedagogues.

Activities and timeline
To ensure the successful implementation of the project, its timeline is divided in two parts accordingly to the main outcomes of the project. In the first part of the project all the activities are structured to support the elaboration of the first Intellectual Output - NEED ANALYSIS REPORT.
The second stage of the project is designed to ensure the development, implementation and precision of the second Intellectual Output - SUPPORT PROGRAMME FOR THE TEACHERS.

ARETE CATALYST is implemented by 7 international partners from Education, Culture and Sports Department of the Riga City Council (Latvia), University of Latvia (Latvia), Tartu University (Estonia),St Peter’s Lutheran School of Tartu (Estonia), Consejería de Educación y Cultura (Spain), University of Oviedo (Spain), Teacher and Resource Center Oviedo (Spain) and 2 associated partners - I.E.S. Alfonso II (Oviedo, Spain)and The Riga Catholic Gymnasium (Latvia).
